Theatre History

In September 2026, the venue was renamed from the Duke of York’s Theatre to the Tom Stoppard Theatre.

The venue, designed by Walter Emden, is one of London’s best known and most historic mid-size playhouses.

It first opened on 10 September 1892 with a production of The Wedding Eve by F. Toulmouche.

The first ever production of J M Barrie’s Peter Pan opened at the then-Duke of York’s theatre in 1904, and such was its immediate popularity that it was revived every Christmas for the next ten years.

A myriad of celebrated productions over the years have included Half Life with John Gielgud, Clouds with Tom Courtenay and Felicity Kendal, and American Buffalo starring Al Pacino.
