A major revival of The Dresser by Academy award winning author Sir Ronald Harwood starring Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith.

Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith come together as lead actor “Sir” and Norman “the dresser” in this eagerly awaited revival of “a wonderfully affectionate and intelligent play about the theatre” The Guardian.

Renowned as Ronald Harwood’s greatest play, The Dresser has been nominated for Olivier and Tony Awards as well as an Academy Award for the screenplay of the film. With a multi-award winning creative team of Ken Stott (Rebus, God of Carnage), Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen, Inside Number 9) and Sean Foley (The Ladykillers, Jeeves and Wooster) this promises to be an unmissable production of a theatrical classic.

The Dresser runs from 5 October 2016 until 14 January 2017 at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

STORY

Both hilarious and poignant, The Dresser explores the relationship between two men who are reluctantly and inevitably co-dependent.

As World War II rages, backstage in a provincial English theatre, an ageing, once-famous classical actor is troubled. Sir, the last in a dying breed of great English Shakespearean actors, is unwilling to take to the stage to deliver his renowned portrayal of King Lear.

It falls to his faithful dresser Norman to rouse another great performance from him, to keep both the show and its star from falling apart.

CAST

Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith lead the cast alongside Harriet Thorpe and Selina Cadell.

Ken Stott has received four Best Actor Olivier Award Nominations for his work at the National Theatre and the West End in The Recruiting Officer, Broken Glass (for which he won Best Actor in a Supporting Role), Art with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay and A View from the Bridge. Ken has also appeared at the National Theatre and West End in plays such as The Princes Play, Three Men on a Horse, The Tempest, Heroes, The Winter’s Tale, God of Carnage and Uncle Vanya.

News about The Dresser

Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith to star in The Dresser
Sean Foley is to direct a major West End revival of Ronald Harwood’s The Dresser starring Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith. Both hilarious and poignant, The Dresser explores the relationship between two men who are reluctantly and inevitably co-dependent. The play tells the heart-breaking story of an ageing, once-famous classical actor played by Stott and his long-suffering dresser (Shearsmith) as they struggle to keep the show on the road against the backdrop of a down-at-heel regional theatre in wartime Britain. Nominated for Olivier and Tony Awards as well as an Academy Award for the screenplay of the film starring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay, The Dresser is considered Harwood’s greatest play. Ken Stott’s recent work includes Sky Atlantic's British crime thriller Fortitude, Oscar Nominated Tolkien trilogy The Hobbit, and James Marsh’s next feature The Knot in which he stars alongside Colin Firth, Rachel Weisz and David Thewlis. The award winning actor’s numerous theatre credits include The Recruiting Officer, Broken Glass, Art with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay and A View from the Bridge. Best known for The League of Gentlemen and more recently BBC 2 hit show Inside Number 9 Shearsmith’s theatre credits include Absent Friends (Harold Pinter), Betty Blue Eyes (Novello), Ghost Stories (Duke of York’s), Producers (Theatre Royal), As You Like It (Wyndams) and Art (Whitehall). The Dresser is to be co-produced with Mark Rubinstein Ltd and Jonathan Church Productions in the first production for Church’s new company after leaving Chichester Festival Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company. The Dresser runs from 5 October 2016 until 14 January 2017 at the Duke of York's Theatre. BOOKING Book tickets to The Dresser
