Book now for a major new West End revival of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, starring BAFTA and Olivier Award winner Kristin Scott Thomas and Stephen Mangan, in a new adaptation by Conor McPherson (Jerusalem), directed by Ian Rickson (The Weir, Girl From the North Country) at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 3 October 2026 – 9 January 2027.
Produced by Sonia Friedman (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), the production reunites Rickson and Scott Thomas following their acclaimed collaborations on The Seagull, Electra and Betrayal.
At its centre is Kristin Scott Thomas — the Olivier Award-winning, Oscar-nominated star of The English Patient and Slow Horses — returning to the London stage as Lyubov Ranevskaya, the Russian aristocrat who returns to her childhood estate after years abroad to find her beloved family home and its famous cherry orchard under threat of sale. She is joined by Stephen Mangan (The Split, Episodes) as Lopakhin, the self-made businessman whose ambitions for the estate drive the drama.
What to expect
Expect a tender, funny and profoundly moving production of one of the greatest plays in the modern repertoire. As old loyalties falter and new ambitions rise, a whole way of life teeters on the edge of irreversible change. Chekhov famously conceived The Cherry Orchard as a comedy, and this new adaptation by Conor McPherson promises to bring urgent, contemporary energy to its beautiful and piercing examination of the human heart.

About The Cherry Orchard
“Without the cherry orchard, life has no meaning to me”
The Cherry Orchard is Anton Chekhov’s final masterpiece and remains one of the most celebrated works in modern theatre. Set on a Russian estate at the turn of the 20th century, this poignant and piercing tragicomedy follows Lyubov Ranevskaya (Kristin Scott Thomas) as she returns home to find her family’s ancestral estate and beloved orchard under threat of sale.
By turns funny, deeply moving, and “gripping,” this new production explores a world in delicate, inevitable transition. Through Chekhov’s rich characters and emotional depth, the play examines themes of class, memory, and the passing of an old way of life.
As old loyalties falter and new ambitions rise, a world of privilege begins to crumble. This “bittersweet portrait” asks a timeless and resonant question: can Lyubov truly embrace the future, or will the pull of memory prove impossible to escape? Don’t miss this deeply moving portrait of love, loss, and letting go at the Harold Pinter Theatre for a strictly limited season.
