There’s a backlog in theatreland!
A host of new productions of musicals are circling London trying to find a theatre.
A combination of successful long-runners, and new shows that opened before and during Covid, mean that theatre space is currently limited in London, and new shows are struggling to find a venue.
Hit productions of Spring Awakening at the Ameida Theatre, Operation Mincemeat at the Southwark Playhouse, Tom Jones musical What’s New Pussycat? at Birmingham rep, and Mrs Doubtfire (or just Doubtfire!) from Broadway, are all struggling to find their ideal venue. Also a brand new production of Jonathan Larson’s Rent is scheduled for a West End run.
They join productions already announced, or nearly announced, including a transfer from Broadway for Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill in November 2022, Disney’s hit Broadway musical Newsies, Broadway hit Beetlejuice, and a new musical based on the movie Saving Grace.
Also looking for a venue are shows including The Time Traveler’s Wife, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which is currently on a successful UK tour.
Fingers crossed they all find a home!
