Moggach adapts her original novel, directed by Lucy Bailey, about seven British retirees who are outsourced from the Home Counties to a hotel in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, run by young entrepreneur Sonny Kapoor.

The original movie was a box-office smash, starring Dames Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton, plus Bill Nighy and Dev Patel.

The full cast has been revealed for the brand new tour for Deborah Moggach’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, opening at Richmond Theatre on Monday 5 September 2022. Rula Lenska has joined the new stage adaptation of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Rula's stage credits include The Vagina Monologues, Calendar Girls, Pygmalion, Seven Deadly Sins, Four Deadly Sinners, Eurobeat and 84 Charing Cross Road. Rula Lenska was born Countess Roza-Marie Leopoldyna Lubienska in St. Neots to Polish parents who had fled their homeland, their family estate having been confiscated by Communist forces. Following her education at an Ursuline College in Kent, she became an actor, gaining her first notable starring role in Rock Follies in 1976, going on to appear in many iconic television series such as Robin of Sherwood, Doctor Who, EastEnders, To The Manor Born and Minder, ITV’s Coronation Street as Claudia Colby, and most recently a BAFTA-nominated Inside No 9 for BBC 2. Lenska joins Oscar-winner Hayley Mills (Pollyanna, The Parent Trap, Whistle Down the Wind) and Paul Nicholas (Jesus Christ Superstar, EastEnders) with additional casting be revealed. A brand-new stage adaptation of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is heading to the West End in 2023, following a UK tour Oscar winner Hayley Mills, Paul Nicholas and Paula Wilcox will star in a new stage adaptation of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which will begin a UK tour later this year followed by a West End run in 2023. Tickets for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on sale soon. Written by Deborah Moggach who now adapts her bestselling novel 2004’s These Foolish Things for the stage, it having previously inspired the BAFTA and Golden Globe-nominated film. The cherished story will be brought to life on stage when it opens at the Richmond Theatre on Monday 5th September 2022 and is directed by Lucy Bailey (Oleanna, UK Tour & West End); Gaslight, UK Tour; Witness for the Prosecution, London’s County Hall). Since starting her career at the age of nine, Hayley Mills has shot 33 feature films and has been nominated for many awards. Hayley was twelve years old when she made her first feature film, Tiger Bay, and won an Academy Award at the age of thirteen in 1961 for her leading performance in Pollyanna. She went on to star in such films as The Parent Trap (1961), Whistle Down the Wind (1961), The Family Way (1966), Endless Night (1971), and Appointment With Death (1988). Recent screen credits include Moving On & Pitching In for BBC One; Compulsion for Channel 5 and the feature film, Last Train to Christmas, directed by Julian Kemp. On stage, Hayley most recently performed off-Broadway in a new comedy play, Party Face, directed by Amanda Bearse. Paul Nicholas became a household favourite in the role of Vince Pinner in the celebrated British sitcom Just Good Friends which won the BAFTA award for Best Comedy Series. Paul has continued to star in many TV series including the evil Gavin Sullivan in EastEnders and can be seen as himself in the BAFTA-nominated series The Real Marigold Hotel and Marigold On Tour.  On stage, Paul’s theatrical success began more than fifty years ago in 1968 when he originated the role of Claude in the London premiere of Hair. Following this, in 1972 he originated the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. He starred as Danny Zuko in the original West End production of Grease with Elaine Page and as the Rum Tum Tugger in the original production of Cats. She first came to public attention after she joined the National Youth Theatre at the age of seventeen and was offered the part of Beryl in The Lovers, an ITV sitcom written by Jack Rosenthal and co-starring Richard Beckinsale. A second series and a feature film followed. Paula then went on to star as Chrissie in Man About the House opposite Richard O'Sullivan. The series ran for three years, and she also starred in the feature film of the same name. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel to get new stage adaptation and West End run
Deborah Moggach to adapt her best-selling novel, with Life of Pi producer Simon Friend producing. It was one of Britain's most successful movies. And now The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is set to become a new stage play. The play has been adapted by Deborah Moggach, from her best selling novel These Foolish Things - which became the hit movie starring Dames Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton, plus Bill Nighy and Dev Patel. Lucy Bailey (Witness for the Prosecution) is to direct, with Simon Friend (Life of Pi) producing. In the story, seven British retirees who are enticed by adverts for a luxury retirement home in India, leave England to begin a new life. However, on arrival they discover that the "palace" they thought they were retiring to is actually a shell of its former self, the staff are eccentric and the days of the Raj are long behind them. The show will kick off at Richmond Theatre on 30 August 2022 before a UK tour, and then head into the West End in 2023. The tour includes the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield, Theatre Royal Brighton, Theatre Royal Glasgow, Theatre Royal Newcastle, Hall for Cornwall, Truro, Churchill Theatre Bromley, Theatre Royal Norwich, Curve in Leicester, The Lowry in Salford, the New Victoria Theatre in Woking and the Theatre Royal Bath next December 2022. Deborah Moggach told the press that she is "so thrilled that my characters are stepping into a new life on the stage. They've been waiting impatiently for the curtain to rise, and none of them is getting any younger. So welcome again to the Marigold Hotel!
