The first theatre on the site was opened on 29 December 1720 as Little Theatre in the Haymarket; theatre renamed Theatre Royal in the Haymarket in 1766; renamed to Theatre Royal Haymarket in 1855.
The Theatre Royal Haymarket was originally known as The Little Theatre in the Hay. It was designed and constructed by John Potter in 1720.
Around 1820 all of the buildings on the east side of the Haymarket, from the theatre running south, were rebuilt because of John Nash‘s schemes for the improvement of the neighbourhood.
The Theatre Royal Haymarket as we know it today opened on 4 July 1821 with a production of Sheridan’s The Rivals, and is the third longest running theatre in the West End.
Stars who have trod the Haymarket’s boards include Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Eileen Atkins, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sienna Millar, Sheridan Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Joanna Lumley and Robert Lindsay.
