Urinetown to transfer to Apollo Theatre
Jamie Lloyd's hit revival of cult Broadway show Urinetown is to transfer into the Apollo Theatre. The show will run from 29 September 2014 at the Apollo Theatre. [caption id="" align="alignright" width="240"] Richard Fleeshman in Urinetown at the St James Theatre[/caption] Jamie Lloyd said to the Telegraph today that the show “defies a great many conventions – a lot more so than The Book of Mormon, which I would say is at heart a very traditional musical". The cult musical is an unlikely a story about love and small-town corruption set in a dystopian world inflicted with a terrible water shortage and where you have to pay to pee or face the consequences. At the St James Theatre, casting included Richard Fleeshman (Ghost The Musical) as municipal toilet clerk Bobby Strong, Olivier Award-winning actress Jenna Russell (Mr Burns, Merrily We Roll Along), Marc Elliot (EastEnders) as Mr. McQueen, Broadway actor Cory English (Young Frankenstein) and RSC actor Jonathan Slinger (Hamlet) as Officer Lockstock. Casting is to be announced for the Apollo transfer. The director/designer team of Jamie Lloyd and Soutra Gilmour currently have two productions running in the West End - The Commitments at the Palace Theatre and Martin Freeman in Richard III at the Trafalgar Studios. Urinetown, which won three Tonys for its Broadway run, features music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, . The current show at the Apollo - Let The Right One In directed by John Tiffany - is timed to end its run on 30 August 2014. Urinetown at the St James Theatre – Review
A review of Urinetown at the St James Theatre [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="590"] Richard Fleeshman and Jenna Russell in Urinetown at the St James Theatre[/caption] Urinetown ran for three years on Broadway, largely thanks to a cult following inspired by its tongue-in-cheek lampooning of corporate greed and environmental excess. And at last it has made it to London, in a new production at the St James Theatre that does more than justice to the original. Jamie Lloyd's direction and Soutra Gilmour's design work perfectly together, wringing out every last drop of satirical humour from a musical that leaps head and shoulders above many other recent new musicals in town. Jenna Russell consistently stands out as an actress at the absolute top of her game (her Olivier award nomination this week for Merrily We Roll Along is case in point), and delivers an entertaining performance as toilet gatekeeper Penelope Pennywise. What that woman can do whilst dangling a fag out of her mouth should win her an Olivier Award all by itself, and her performance sets her up nicely to tackle Mrs Lovett from Sweeney Todd at some point very soon. Richard Fleeshman is, besides being VERY HOT, a passionate and charming leading man as Bobby, although did feel a bit underpowered at times - particularly up against newcomer Rosanna Hyland as Hope Cladwell, who has the voice and acting skills to match most current West End stars. A hugely entertaining night at the theatre - just make sure you go before you go. A West End transfer is surely being planned as we speak.
