Our run-down of the Top New Musicals to see in London in 2023.
The West End is never short of a good musical, and that goes double for 2023 for an impressive line-up of new shows and revivals coming to town.
Broadway is exporting some crowd-pleasing shows to London for 2023, with an array of top creative talent heading over to the UK. Shows heading our way from New York include Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations at the Prince Edward Theatre, which follows the iconic Sixties boyband and features all of their greatest hits; and the London premiere of huge Broadway hit Mrs Doubtfire The Musical at the Shaftesbury Theatre, brought to London by four-time Tony Award winning director Jerry Zaks (Hello, Dolly!).
In terms of revivals of great musicals, we have the blockbuster new production of Crazy For You at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, coming from a five-star run at Chichester Festival Theatre, directed by Broadway legend Susan Stroman and starring the multi-talented West End man of the moment, Charlie Stemp; Nick Hytner is directing a thrillingly immersive new production of Broadway classic Guys & Dolls at the Bridge Theatre starring Daniel Mays, Andrew Richardson, Celinde Schoenmaker, Marisha Wallace and Cedric Neal; Michael Ball returns to the musical that made him a household name in a major revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love at the Lyric Theatre; The Wizard of Oz is returning to the London Palladium in June, with the Leicester Curve’s hit production coming to London featuring additional songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice; the Young Vic’s acclaimed revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical Oklahoma! is coming to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre; and Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is set to revive La Cage aux Folles as their main Summer musical, with artistic director Timothy Sheader directing.
Brand new musicals are becoming a rarity in the West End, so when we have some we need to celebrate them! New musicals heading to town in 2023 include comedy musical Operation Mincemeat has already enjoyed a number of sold-out runs in London, and now gets a West End home at the Fortune Theatre; and Rebecca The Musical, based on Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel, coming to the Charing Cross Theatre.
Back to London in 2023 after previously successful runs in the West End include Groundhog Day The Musical at The Old Vic, which features music by Matilda composer Tim Minchin and stars Andy Karl; and We Will Rock You at the London Coliseum; and Grease at the Dominion Theatre.
