2022 is proving to be a big year for London Theatre, offering a huge range of new and existing shows playing in town, from big London musicals to exciting West End plays.
Many of the long-running shows featured in this list will extend their booking periods over the next few months, as they will be running throughout 2022.
New musicals in London in 2022 include the Broadway transfer of lavish musical My Fair Lady at the London Coliseum, directed by Bartlett Sher; the return of Cole Porter’s joyous musical Anything Goes at the Barbican Theatre, this time starring Kerry Ellis; Beverley Knight and Jennifer Saunders in the major revival of Sister Act at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith; and the Chichester revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic show South Pacific, playing at Sadler’s Wells this summer.
New productions of plays coming to London in 2022 include Amy Adams in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie at the Duke of Yorks; also at the Duke of York’s, Juliet Stevenson in The Doctor, which transfers in from a sell-out season at the Almeida Theatre; Alex Jennings in The Southbury Child at the Bridge Theatre, directed by Nicholas Hytner; Stranger Things star David Harbour in Mad House at the Ambassadors Theatre; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at the Gillian Lynne Theatre; and the RSC’s new production of much-loved animated film My Neighbour Totoro at the Barbican Theatre.
Long-running West End musicals playing through the whole of 2022 include major new openings Moulin Rouge! at the Piccadilly Theatre, and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. Plus big musicals Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, Les Miserables at the Sondheim Theatre, Disney’s The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre, Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre, Frozen The Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Back to the Future at the Adelphi Theatre, Jersey Boys at the Trafalgar Theatre, Six The Musical at the Vaudeville Theatre, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical at the Aldwych Theatre, The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre, The Book of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Mamma Mia! at the Novello Theatre, & Juliet at the Shaftesbury Theatre, The Drifters Girl at the Garrick Theatre, Get Up Stand Up, The Bob Marley Musical at the Lyric Theatre, and much more!
