The new musical stage adaptation of My Best Friends Wedding starring Alexandra Burke will receive its world premiere in 2021, it has been announced.
The touring production will open at Manchester Palace Theatre running from 20-25 September 2021 followed by an extensive UK tour which will run until mid 2022. The piece was scheduled to open in Plymouth this September 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus.
My Best Friends Wedding The Musical is adapted for the stage by Jonathan Harvey (Beautiful Thing, Gimme Gimme Gimme) and the film’s original screenwriter Ronald Bass, and will feature classic Burt Bacharach and Hal David songs including I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, Walk on By, I Say A Little Prayer and What’s New Pussycat.
Directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, the show is led by Alexandra Burke (The Bodyguard, Chess, Chicago, Sister Act, X-Factor) in the role played by Julia Roberts in the film.
The story follows fiery food critic Julianne Potter, as she vows to win back her soon to be wed ex-boyfriend Michael. With the perfect Kimmy standing her ground, can she derail her her best friend’s wedding in time and keep Michael all for herself?
