Chekhov’s darkly comic classic Ivanov crashes into the Bridge Theatre for a strictly limited season, from 27 July 2027 until 16 October 2027.

Set to star as the title character is Chris Pine (Star Trek, Wonder Woman) in his highly anticipated London stage debut.

Please note that the dates for this production have changed. It was originally scheduled to run in 2026; however, it has been postponed due to a scheduling conflict with Chris Pine.

A contemporary retelling of a classic

Written and directed by Simon Stone (The Lady from the Sea, Yerma, Phaedra), this new production will bring Chekhov’s comic drama into a contemporary setting.

Stone is no stranger to adapting classic works. Most recently, he saw success with his productions of The Lady from the Sea and The Oresteia, both at the Bridge Theatre.

This visceral production of Chekhov’s 1887 play also reunites the acclaimed creative team from The Lady from the Sea under the direction of Simon Stone.

Nikolai Ivanov has forgotten how to be happy. Or was he ever? Maybe it’s just burnout. Married to the perfect woman, with a career behind him and a reputation to uphold, he should be heading into midlife feeling confident.

But debts are mounting, his wife is unwell, and the world seems to be closing in. What exactly is gnawing at him — and can he shake it off? There’s a party tonight at the Lebedevs, after all.

As he stumbles from one faux-pas to the next, Ivanov tries to rekindle his lust for life. Anna sacrificed everything to marry him — even her parents disowned her because of his politics — but his constant melancholy and self-destruction are wearing her down.

When change finally comes, it’s in the absurd, undignified form of an affair. Can Ivanov save his marriage, his will to live and his reputation — or was it always destined to fall apart?
