Live at King’s Cross Station – with a real steam train – The Railway Children comes to London is this stunning stage adaptation.

All aboard as The Railway Children returns to London, this time at a breathtaking new 1,000 seat venue at King’s Cross Station.

This stunning adaptation of E Nesbit’s classic novel The Railway Children features a stage built around a real train track, and a beautiful 60-tonne locomotive train that steams into the theatre.

The Railway Children won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment, and Mike Kenny’s adaptation of The Railway Children is directed by Damian Cruden, with design by Jo Scotcher, lighting by Richard G. Jones, music by Christopher Madin and sound by Craig Vear.

Edith Nesbit’s much loved children’s book has been adapted for the stage and screen, most famously in the 1970 film starring Jenny Agutter, Bernard Cribbins, Dinah Sheridan and Sally Thomsett.

The Railway Children runs until 8 January 2017 at the King’s Cross Theatre.

THE STORY

The Railway Children tells the story of Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis, three children whose lives change dramatically when their father is mysteriously taken away. They move from London to a cottage in rural Yorkshire with their mother, where they befriend the local railway porter, Perks, and embark on a magical journey of discovery, friendship and adventure. But the mystery remains – where is Father, and is he ever coming back?

THE CAST

The cast of The Railway Children includes Martin Barass as Mr Perks, Suzy Cooper as Mother, Sophie Ablett as Bobbie, Matt Jessup as Peter, Beth Lilly as Phyllis, Lindsay Allen as Mrs Perks, Peter Gardiner as Doctor/Butler, Connie Hyde as Mrs Viney, Shaun McCourt as Jim, Blair Plant as Father/Schepansky, Moray Treadwell as the Old Gentleman and Adam Collier, Helen Brampton, Alan Drake and Julie Gilby. The children’s ensemble is made up of four teams of ten children aged between 8 and 16.

  1. A lovely production marred by the building works outside. Soundproofing in this temporary theatre is non existent. My advice is to avoid matinees or anytime builders are working

  2. Such an inspired production should be seen by all. Brilliant stage work; a script which used so much of the original text; a cast who seemed to enjoy every minute; a stage crew who made it seem we moved roound the set rather than the set moving; I am at a loss for suitable expressions. I feel sad that everyone will not be able to watch this production, unless it can tour to a sidings near by.
