Theatre History

County Hall was originally the headquarters of the London County Council (LCC) and later the Greater London Council (GLC), remaining the seat of power in London for over 64 years.

The main six storey building was originally designed by Ralph Knott, in an Edwardian Baroque style. Built by Holland, Hannen & Cubitts, construction started in 1911 and was finally opened in 1922 by King George V.

In 1986 the building stopped being the centre of London government, and became a multi-use leisure space, including two hotels, and Sea Life London Aquarium.

The main council chamber of County Hall was opened as a theatre in October 2017, with a production of Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution.
