Hollywood superstar Julia Roberts may be following in her pal George Clooney’s footsteps and returning to the stage.
The Oscar-winning actress, who is currently promoting her latest movie After the Hunt directed by Luca Guadagnino, recently spoke to Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye about the possibility of returning to the theatre.
Julia Roberts’ last stage outing was her Broadway debut in 2006, in a revival of Richard Greenberg’s Three Days of Rain, alongside Bradley Cooper and Paul Rudd.
Rumours have been buzzing for a while that Roberts may be tempted back to Broadway – or even London, and she confirmed to Baz that, “I hope it’s true. It’s been a long-held dream of mine to do that. And now that our kids are grown up, I think it affords me more of the space for something like that.”
She also said that she would be open to making her London stage debut. “Of course I would, yes. I mean, it’s funny because there are these tiny theaters that are near our apartment in New York and little places near our house here [in San Francisco]. And I just think, ‘Oh, that would be so fun to do a play in a really small space.’ Almost like a workshop, almost like going to theater school, but people have to buy tickets to school. Fingers crossed. It would be so great.”
Julia Roberts has long held a passion for theatre, and often attends shows in New York and London. “I just think there’s really nothing like it; I’ve loved it since I was, like, a 7-year-old and saw Yul Brenner in The King and I at the Atlantic Civic Center Theater. This is the most magical thing a person can do with their life”, she told Baz Bamigboye.
Roberts may have been inspired to think again about performing on stage after her Hollywood friend George Clooney starred last year on Broadway in a hugely successful production of Good Night, and Good Luck.
Clooney has confirmed that a West End transfer of the production may be on the cards, although there are currently no details on dates or venue.
After the Hunt starring Julia Roberts is now playing on Amazon Prime.
