The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced casting for its forthcoming production of The Red Shoes.
The Red Shoes will play the RSC’s Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 7 November 2024 to 19 January 2025.
This new version by Nancy Harris of Hans Christian Andersen’s much-loved story is directed by Kimberley Rampersad, who is Associate Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival in Canada. Rampersad will also choreograph movement on the production.
The Red Shoes will star Nikki Cheung as Karen. Nikki is a ballet, jazz and contemporary theatre performer, with recent credits including Disney’s The Lion King.
The show also stars West End favourite Dianne Pilkington (The Wizard of Oz, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Wicked) as Mariella, and James Doherty (London Road, Come From Away, House Of The Dragon) as Bob, the social climbing couple who adopt Karen.
West End star Sebastien Torkia (Matilda The Musical, A Christmas Carol) stars as the shoemaker, Sylvestor, and the cast also includes Joseph Edwards as Clive, Kody Mortimer as Prince, and Sakuntala Ramanee as Mags.
The Ensemble features Julie Armstrong, Momar Diagne, Caità Ellen, Anya Ferdinand, Michael Lin, Ben Redfern and Alexandra Waite-Roberts, and Onstage swings are Leslie Garcia Bowman, Mia Musakambeva.
The creative team also includes Set and costume design by Colin Richmond, Lighting design by Ryan Day, Composer Marc Teitler, Sound design by Gregory Clarke, Illusionist Paul Kieve, and Casting Director Charlotte Sutton CDG.
In The Red Shoes, when an orphaned young woman is taken in by some local do-gooders, she is expected to be seen and not heard. Dazzled by a pair of beautiful shoes, she sees the chance to do and be so much more, but soon her feet betray her, taking her to places she does not wish to go.
The Red Shoes will run in the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 7 November 2024 to 19 January 2025.
