Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2023 Nominations announced

The Evening Standard has revealed the nominations for this year’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2023.

Acting nominations include Nicole Scherzinger (Actor) for Sunset Boulevard; Andrew Scott (Actor) for Vanya; Paapa Essiedu (Actor) and Taylor Russell (Actor) for The Effect; Paul Mescal, Anjana Vasan and Patsy Ferran for A Streetrcar Named Desire; Mark Gatiss for The Motive and the Cue; Rachael Stirling for Private Lives at the Donmar Warehouse; Sophie Okonedo for Medea at @sohoplace; Charlie Stemp for Crazy for You – now playing in the West End; Kyle Ramar Freeman for A Strange Loop; and Marisha Wallace for Guys & Dolls at the Bridge Theatre.

Best musical nods include Guys & Dolls, Standing at the Sky’s Edge at the National Theatre – and coming to the West End, A Strange Loop at the Barbican Theatre, and Tammy Faye at the Almeida Theatre.

Best Play nominees include Dear England by James Graham, Jack Thorne’s The Motive and the Cue, Sam Holcroft’s A Mirror, and Ryan Calais Cameron’s Retrogade.

Director nods include Jamie Lloyd for Sunset Boulevard, Rupert Goold for Dear England, Rebecca Frecknall for A Streetcar Named Desire, and Nicholas Hytner for Guys & Dolls.

Productions to scoop multiple nominations include Guys & Dolls with five nominations, and A Streetcar Named Desire with four nods,

The awards ceremony for the 67th awards will take place at Claridge’s Hotel in London on 19 November 2023, presented by writer and actor Susan Wokoma (Never Have I Ever, Chichester Festival Theatre), and hosted by Evening Standard owner Lord Lebedev and actors David Harewood, Vanessa Kirby, Ian McKellen and Sienna Miller.

The nominations and winners are decided by a judging panel that includes Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye, The Standard’s Culture Editor Nancy Durrant, and their chief theatre critic Nick Curtis, and the criteria for eligibility is a new production or performances on the London stage between 13 October 2022 and 12 October 2023.

Last year’s award-winners included Jodie Comer, James McAvoy, Best of Enemies, and Oklahoma!
