The Evening Standard has set the date and venue for its annual Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2023.
The 67th year of the awards will take place on 19 November 2023 at Claridge’s Hotel in London.
The ceremony will be hosted by the Evening Standard’s proprietor, Lord Lebedev, and co-hosted by actors David Harewood, Vanessa Kirby, Ian McKellen and Sienna Miller.
The ceremony will be presented by writer and actor Susan Wokoma (Never Have I Ever, Chichester Festival Theatre).
Award categories include best play, best actor, the Milton Shulman Award for best director, the Natasha Richardson Award for best actress, the Charles Wintour Award for most promising playwright, and the Lebedev Award, given to an individual or institution for lifetime achievement or a specific critically acclaimed piece of work or series.
The awards shortlist is decided by a panel including Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye and Evening Standard chief theatre critic Nick Curtis, and the Evening Standard Theatre Awards nominations will be announced later this month.
The criteria for eligibility is a new production or performances on the London stage between 13 October 2022 and 12 October 2023.
Lord Lebedev said in a statement: “The Evening Standard is proud to celebrate the incredible creatives who, in such difficult times, have continued to dazzle on stage and create magic behind the scenes. The awards are part of London’s heritage, and this year’s ceremony is shaping up to be one of our most special yet.”
Sienna Miller said: “I am delighted to be co-hosting this year’s Evening Standard Theatre Awards, an historic event that has long recognised the unique talents of the London stage.”
Dylan Jones, editor-in-chief of the Standard, said: “I am honoured to take part in the glitziest celebration of the London stage. The Standard has always championed London’s creatives and nowhere is this energy more powerful than in the theatre.”
Winners of last year’s 2022 Evening Standard Theatre Awards included Jodie Comer, James McAvoy, Best of Enemies, and Oklahoma!
