1968

Who designed the Bloomsbury Theatre?

James Cubitt & Partners

The Bloomsbury Theatre first opened in 1968 as the rather unsexy Central Collegiate Building Auditorium, which was later renamed to the Collegiate Theatre.

Owned by University College London (UCL), the building was renamed in 1982 as The Bloomsbury Theatre.

An impressive range of performers have appeared at the theatre over the years, including UCL alumnus Ricky Gervais, singer Adele, American Jazz artist Gregory Porter, and comedians Jo Brand and Julian Clary.

In 2019, fifty years after its very first performance, this Brutalist building reopened following a major renovation to create a new main auditorium with more than 500 seats, as well as the smaller Bloomsbury Studio.
