August Wilson’s acclaimed drama comes to London

August Wilson’s landmark play Fences comes to Lyric Hammersmith Theatre from 6 to 31 October 2026 in a powerful new production directed by Daniel Bailey (Red Pitch).

Funny, moving and deeply human, this Pulitzer Prize-winning drama explores family, ambition and the barriers people build around the ones they love.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest American plays ever written, Fences returns in a gripping new London production that remains as powerful and relevant today as ever.

Book Fences tickets now for this unmissable production at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre.

What is August Wilson’s Fences about?

Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, Fences follows Troy Maxson, a former baseball player whose unrealised dreams continue to shape his relationships with those closest to him.

As Troy struggles to hold his family together, tensions grow between him, his wife Rose and their teenage son Cory, who hopes for opportunities beyond the limits his father faced.

Blending humour, heartbreak and powerful social commentary, August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play explores race, family and the generational impact of missed opportunities.
