See production images for Fences, Headlong’s new touring production of August Wilson’s landmark play, currently playing at Leeds Playhouse and coming to the Lyric Hammersmith.

Fences, directed by award-winning director Daniel Bailey (Red Pitch), marks the first major UK revival of Wilson’s American blockbuster in over a decade. It stars Ray Fearon (Othello, RSC; Fleabag, BBC) as Troy, alongside Madeline Appiah (The Winter’s Tale, RSC; Tina Turner The Musical, West End) as Rose and Michael Ahomka-Lindsay (Cabaret, Kit Kat Club) as Lyons, in a co-production with Leeds Playhouse, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and HOME Manchester.

A landmark American play, reimagined for today

Troy Maxson has cheated death once, but the past keeps closing in. On Pittsburgh’s streets he cracks jokes and spins stories, but at home the pressure is building, with his wife Rose holding the family together and hoping their son Cory might step into a changing world with more freedom than Troy ever had. The play explores enduring themes of masculinity, motherhood, music and the hope for a different future, building towards a reckoning that threatens to reshape the Maxson family for good.

Fences reunites several of Headlong’s long-standing touring partnerships, including with Leeds Playhouse following Henry V, A Raisin in the Sun and Wilson’s own Jitney; with the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre after 2024’s A Raisin in the Sun; and with HOME Manchester after The House Party.
