The Bridge Theatre has confirmed that a major new production of Aeschylus’ The Oresteia will play its Summer 2026 season.

Written and directed by Simon Stone – after Aeschylus and others, the production will run for a strictly limited 11-week season from 2 July to 19 September 2026.

Tickets for The Oresteia are now on sale for the Bridge Theatre in London.

The epic Greek tragedy takes the slot originally intended for Ivanov, which has been officially postponed to 2027 due to a scheduling conflict with lead actor Chris Pine.

The Oresteia follows the run of Sondheim’s Into the Woods, which ends in May 2026.

A creative reunion

Australian director Simon Stone returns to the Bridge following his acclaimed 2025 staging of The Lady from the Sea, which starred Alicia Vikander and Andrew Lincoln.

For this production, Stone reunites with the same creative team, including:

  • Set Design: Lizzie Clachan
  • Costume Design: Mel Page
  • Music: Stefan Gregory
  • Lighting: Nick Schlieper
  • Casting: Jessica Ronane CDG

The production is being created in collaboration with Wouter van Ransbeek, with casting for the production to be announced in the coming weeks.

A modern vision

This landmark production is expected to bring a modern, visceral energy to the ancient text, raising timeless questions about morality and the true cost of war.

Speaking on the enduring power of the trilogy, Simon Stone commented:

“The Oresteia is one of the theatre’s great foundational texts and it hasn’t lost any of its potency to this day. A family haunted by its part in an unjust war, the painful burden of inherited trauma and inter-generational conflict, the descent into an increasingly merciless vortex of violence: as long as humankind wages wars and as long as families tear themselves apart this story will remain painfully, cathartically relevant.”

Stone added: “It is with great excitement that we embark on bringing this tale into our times at the Bridge Theatre.”

About The Oresteia

Written more than two millennia ago, The Oresteia is a gripping saga of revenge, power, and the birth of justice. The trilogy follows the bloody fallout of the Trojan War within the House of Atreus, centring on Orestes – a young man caught in a multi-generational cycle of violence as his parents, Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, wage a private war of vengeance.
