James McAvoy stars in satirical comedy The Ruling Class by Peter Barnes at the Trafalgar Studios

Hollywood star James McAvoy (Filth, The Last King of Scotland, X-Men) returns to the Trafalgar Studios in 2015, starring in a major revival of Peter Barnes’ comedy The Ruling Class.

Directed by Jamie Lloyd as part of his second Trafalgar Transformed season at the Trafalgar Studios, McAvoy and Lloyd reunite following their hugely successful production of Macbeth.

Running from 16 January to 11 April 2015, McAvoy stars as Jack, the 14th Earl of Gurney in the first major revival of Barnes’ black and caustic class comedy.

Bubbling with acerbic wit and feverish energy, Olivier Award-winning and Oscar-nominated writer Peter Barnes’ razor-sharp satire combines a ferocious mix of hilarity and horror whilst mercilessly exposing the foibles of the English nobility.

Designed by Soutra Gilmour, with lighting by Jon Clark and sound by Ben and Max Ringham, this explosively funny play is by turns wild, funny, shocking, subversive and brutal – and not to be missed.

THE CAST

The Ruling Class stars BAFTA winning and Golden Globe nominated actor James McAvoy (Filth, The Last King of Scotland, Atonement, X-Men) as. Jack, the 14th Earl of Gurney, alongside Ron Cook, Kathryn Drysdale, Joshua McGuire, Anthony O’Donnell , Michael Cronin, Serena Evans, Paul Leonard, Elliot Levey, Forbes Masson, Rosy Benjamin, Andrew Bloomer and Oliver Lavery.

THE STORY

Singularly unsuited to a life in the upper echelons of elite society, Jack finds himself at the centre of a ruthless power struggle as his scheming family strives to uphold their reputation.
