It was a huge hit for Channel 4, and now TV drama It’s a Sin may be a success all over again on the stage.
Star of It’s a Sin, Olly Alexander, told WhatsOnStage last week that, “I can tell you that there has been work to make It’s a Sin for the stage. I think there has even been some kind of work on making it a dance piece, a musical, I know that there’s various people working on it. So watch this space.”
Alexander’s update supersedes an update last year from writer of It’s a Sin, Russell T Davies. Speaking at a BAFTA event he said that, “A lot of people came to me after that, saying, ‘make a musical’ and I just wanted to move on. I didn’t want to wallow. It was very strange, with its success – it was very hard to celebrate, because it was this enormous success and yet such a tragic true story.”
Davies also said, “A lot of good names, posh names, said to me, ‘Do a musical’ and I just didn’t want to stay there. I thought ‘I’ve done it’, and I felt like I’d be treading water or trying to repeat a success or almost profiting off something that’s very dark…”
However, Russell T Davies did leave the door open to a possible staging, saying that he “might go back to it one day”.
Olly Alexander’s update may hopefully mean that It’s a Sin is getting closer to a stage adaptation.
It’s A Sin aired on Channel 4 in 2021, with the limited series telling the story of five friends who grow up in London in the shadow of the Aids epidemic.
The critically acclaimed drama starred Olly Alexander, Nathaniel Curtis, Omari Douglas, Lydia West and Callum Scott Howells.
Russell T Davies’s next TV project is Tip-Toe, a new drama for Channel 4 which is now filming in Manchester starring Alan Cumming, David Morrissey, Elizabeth Berrington, Denise Welch, Pooky Quesnel, Paul Rhys and Charlie Condou.
