Wicked beats Mamma Mia! at global movie box office, ahead of UK digital release

The new movie adaptation of hit stage musical Wicked has hit a major milestone.

Distributed by Universal, Wicked has overtaken the movie version of West End hit Mamma Mia! to become the biggest worldwide stage musical movie adaptation of all time.

The Wicked movie has made around $634.4 million so far, with $210.2 million of that coming from outside the US.

News of the major milestone comes a few days before the Wicked movie is digitally released in the UK, this Friday 3 January at 12am, including on Prime Video, and Apple TV / iTunes.

The physical, blu-ray and DVD release of Wicked is expected a month later, on 4 February 2025. You can pre-order the Wicked movie on Prime Video now.

Wicked will be digitally released in the United States tomorrow, 31 December 2024; and in Australia on 6 January 2025.

Directed by Jon M Chu, the movie stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, with Jonathan Bailey (Richard II) as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard.

The cast also includes Andy Nyman (Hello, Dolly!, The Producers) as Governor Thropp, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Keala Settle (Fly More Than You Fall) as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric, Michael Carmichael as Nikidik, Peter Dinklage as Dr. Dillamond, Alice Fearn (Dear Evan Hansen) as Galinda’s mother, and Adam James (King Charles III) as Galinda’s father, plus Sharon D. Clarke (The Importance of Being Earnest, Death of a Salesman), and Courtney Mae-Briggs (Back to the Future, Hamilton).

The movie’s current worldwide performance also beats Mamma Mia 2, Maleficent, The Little Mermaid and The Greatest Showman (excluding China).

The current Wicked movie release is Part One of a two-part saga, with Wicked Part Two getting a distribution date of 21 November 2025.

The soundtrack to the movie has also been released featuring the show’s famous songs including “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” “Dancing Through Life,” “The Wizard And I” and more. The Wicked soundtrack is available to order and listen to here.

Wicked live on stage also continues to play at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London.
