The UK’s loss is America’s gain when it comes to My Best Friend’s Wedding The Musical.
The new musical based on the hit Julia Roberts film was to get it’s world premiere in the UK in 2020, directed by Rachel Kavanagh (Clueless, The Great British Bake Off Musical, A Knight’s Tale), and starring Alexandra Burke.
But Covid derailed the tour and it was sadly cancelled.
Now, a new US production is premiering the show, ahead of a rumoured Broadway transfer.
Playing at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine, US from 26 September 2024, the production is helmed by Tony Award-winning director Kathleen Marshall (Kiss Me, Kate, Anything Goes), and features an A-list cast including Krystal Joy Brown (Merrily We Roll Along) as Julianne, Matt Doyle (Company, Sinatra) as Michael and Lianah Sta. Ana (Miss Saigon) as Kimmy.

The show also stars Morgan Bryant (Mean Girls) as Samantha, Zoe Jensen (Six) as Amanda, Telly Leung (Disney’s Aladdin) as George, Mark Lotito (Some Like It Hot) as Walter, Austin Phillips (Parade) as Scotty, and Soara-Joye Ross (Young Frankenstein) as Isabelle.
Based on the hit movie starring Julia Roberts, Rupert Everett and Cameron Diaz, the show has a book by our very own Jonathan Harvey (Beautiful Thing, Here You Come Again!) with Ron Bass, based on Bass’s movie screenplay.
The songs are from Burt Bacharach & Hal David’s catalogue, including I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, Walk on By, I Say A Little Prayer and What’s New Pussycat?.
In the show, food critic Julianne Potter has always snubbed romance, which is the reason she broke up with her sweetheart Michael O’Neal. But when she hears he’s about to be married, she vows to win him back for good, inspite of his perfect bride-to-be standing in the way. Can she derail her best friend’s wedding in time and keep Michael all for herself?
There’s no current news on whether My Best Friend’s Wedding will come back to the UK, but we have everything crossed.
