Brian Cox’s critically acclaimed performance as Johan Sebastian Bach in new play The Score may be getting a London run.
West End audiences who didn’t get a chance to see The Score at the Theatre Royal Bath last year may be in luck.
Baz in Deadline recently spoke to the Succession star Brian Cox, with the Scottish actor confirming that the production, which was directed by Trevor Nunn, would be coming into the West End.
Any specifics in terms of dates or venue are yet to be announced, although it is believed to be later this year.
The Score enjoyed some terrific reviews from the critics when it opened in Bath in October 2023. The production also starred Cox’s real-life wife Nicole Ansari-Cox (Deadwood, Succession), as Bach’s wife Anna, Matthew Burns (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as Carl, Doña Croll (The Doctor, The American Plan) as Emilia, Peter de Jersey (Warrior Nun, Doctor Who) as Voltaire, Stephen Hagan (You, The Larkins) as Frederick, Christopher Staines (Wolf Hall, Mrs Dalloway) as Quantz, Benedict Salter as Benda and Eric Sirakian (The Kite Runner, Broadway) as Graun.
Written by Oliver Cotton (Diamond Geezer), The Score is set in Potsdam, Prussia in 1747. Johann Sebastian Bach reluctantly visits the court of Frederick II, Europe’s most ambitious and dangerous leader, and the explosive events of the following days could not have been predicted by either man.
Before The Score, Cox is scheduled to play the West End in Long Day’s Journey Into Night at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London, from 19 March 2024. The production also stars Patricia Clarkson, Anthony Boyle, Daryl McCormack, and Louisa Harland.
The stars of HBO mega-hit Succession are all over the stage at the moment, with a number of the leading cast headlining shows in New York and London. That includes Sarah Snook, who plays sister Shiv in the series and who recently won an Emmy and Golden Globe, taking on a one-person production of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, from 6 February 2024; Jeremy Strong, who plays brother Kendall, starring in Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People at the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York; and a rumoured new West End production of Kenneth Lonergan’s acclaimed play Lobby Hero coming to the West End starring Nicholas Braun, who played cousin Greg.
