Michael Sheen stars as NHS founder Nye Bevan in major new play Nye by Tim Price for the National Theatre.

This epic Welsh fantasia is centred on the pioneering founder of the NHS, Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan, and stars acclaimed, award-winning stage and screen actor Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon, The Queen, Good Omens).

Written by Tim Price (Teh Internet is Serious Business), Nye is a surreal and spectacular journey through the life and legacy of the man who transformed Britain’s welfare state, and is directed by Rufus Norris (Small Island).

Nye is a co-production with Wales Millennium Centre.

Nye is playing at the National Theatre from 24 February to 11 May 2024.

From campaigning at the coalfield to leading the battle to create the NHS, Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan is often referred to as the politician with greatest influence on our country without ever being Prime Minister.

Confronted with death, Nye’s deepest memories lead him on a mind-bending journey back through his life; from childhood to mining underground, Parliament and fights with Churchill in an epic Welsh fantasia.

Written by Tim Price (Teh Internet is Serious Business), this new play is directed by the National's outgoing artistic director Rufus Norris, and charts the life of Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan and his battle to create the NHS.
