The Almeida’s acclaimed production of Spring Awakening is coming to UK cinemas in November 2023 – and they have dropped a brand new trailer for the show.
Winner of the 2022 Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical, with Stuart Thompson also recognised as Most Promising Newcomer, the show wowed critics and audiences for its short run at the Almeida in North London. TimeOut gave the show ★★★★★ and said it was “blown away by the Almeida’s revival”.
Almeida artistic director Rupert Goold (Dear England) directed this first London revival of Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik‘s (American Psycho: A New Musical) acclaimed musical, based on the ground-breaking and once-banned 19th century play by Frank Wedekind.
The cast included Laurie Kynaston (Melchior), Amara Okereke (Wendle), Nathan Armarkwei-Laryea (Hanschen), Asha Banks (Thea), Catherine Cusack (all the adult women), Carly-Sophia Davies (Ilse), Kit Esuruoso (Otto), Mark Lockyer (all the adult men), Bella Maclean(Martha), Joe Pitts (Georg), Maia Tamrakar (Anna), Stuart Thompson (Moritz), Zheng Xi Yong (Ernst), Emily Ooi(ensemble) and Taylor Bradshaw (ensemble).
The creative team for the show included choreography by Lynne Page, design by Miriam Buether, costumes by Nicky Gillibrand, lighting by Jack Knowles, sound by Tony Gayle, orchestrations by Sheik and Simon Hale and musical direction by Jo Cichonska. Casting is by Pippa Ailion CDG and Natalie Gallacher CDG.
Set to one of the most loved scores of the 21st century, Spring Awakening tells a story of adolescent anarchy. A group of teenagers – silenced and controlled by a censorious society – discover a new world of feeling and freedom outside the classroom, with beautiful and devastating consequences.
Spring Awakening will play in cinemas in November 2023 – check the website below for details.
Currently playing at the Almeida is A Mirror until the end of this week, followed by Portia Coughlan from 10 October 2023.
It was announced yesterday that the Almeida’s big new show over Christmas is a stage adaptation of Paweł Pawlikowski’s Academy Award-nominated film Cold War, an epic love story spanning the decades and breadth of Europe at its most divided. Also directed by Rupert Goold, the musical is adapted by Conor McPherson, has music by Elvis Costello, and stars Anya Chalotra (The Witcher), Elliot Levey (Cabaret) and Luke Thallon (Patriots). Cold War will play at the Almeida from 30 November 2023.
