The Old Vic theatre will stage a major new revival of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion this autumn, starring Bertie Carvel (The 47th, The Crown) and Patsy Ferran (A Streetcar Named Desire).
Directed by Richard Jones (Endgame, The Hairy Ape), Pygmalion will play at The Old Vic from 6 September to 28 October 2023.
Both Olivier Award winners, Bertie Carvel will play the eccentric, egotistical linguist Professor Henry Higgins, and Patsy Ferran will star as indomitable, social-climbing Covent Garden flower girl Eliza Doolittle. Further casting is to be announced.
The production is the first show to be announced in The Old Vic’s 2023/2024 season. Sylvia starring Beverley Knight completed its run at the theatre last Saturday; and The Old Vic’s revival of hit Tim Minchin musical Groundhog Day starring Andy Karl kicks off on 20 May 2023, running to 12 August 2023.
Also playing during the summer at The Old Vic is kid’s show Mog The Forgetful Cat (11 to 29 July 2023), and this Christmas sees the return of their hit production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (11 November 2023 to 6 January 2024).
Director, Richard Jones said in a statement: “How lucky the director who is offered the opportunity to collaborate with the charismatic and unique Patsy Ferran and the brilliant, shape-shifting Bertie Carvel – moreover, how lucky to direct these actors in Shaw’s Pygmalion, which follows Professor Higgins’ artificial creation of a society lady who rebels against her creator. I’m very happy to return to the welcoming and supportive team at The Old Vic having been here in 2015 and 2020 with The Hairy Ape and Endgame respectively.”
The Old Vic Artistic Director, Matthew Warchus, said: “I’m very excited to welcome back to The Old Vic the truly exceptional talents of Patsy Ferran, Bertie Carvel and Richard Jones. I anticipate explosive results as they take on Shaw’s searing and iconic study of identity and control.”
Recent West End productions of Pygmalion include a Chichester Festival Theatre production which transferred to the Garrick Theatre in 2011 starring Rupert Everett, Kara Tointon, and Dame Diana Rigg. The play’s West End premiere took place at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1914 starring Herbert Beerbohm Tree and Mrs Patrick Campbell.
