Olivier Awards 2023 nominations announced

The Society of London Theatre has revealed the nominations for its 2023 Olivier Awards.

The RSC’s production of My Neighbour Totoro, which played at the Barbican Theatre, is out in the lead with nine nominations at this year’s Olivier Awards, including best entertainment or comedy play.

Following close behind is new British musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge at the National Theatre (and originally Sheffield Theatres), which received eight nominations including Best new musical.

In with seven nominations is Oklahoma!, which played to packed houses at the Young Vic last year, and is now running at the Wyndham’s Theatre. The show scored nominations for seven awards across the six categories, with Liza Sadovy and Marisha Wallace both vying for Best actress in a supporting role in a musical.

Rebecca Frecknall’s new revivial of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida Theatre, and coming soon to the Phoenix Theatre, scored six nominations including Best Revival, and acting nods to all three of the main leads: Paul Mescal, Patsy Ferran and Anjana Vasan.

To Kill a Mockingbird, currently playing at the Gielgud Theatre starring Matthew Modine, also got six nominations, including Best new play, and best actor for the show’s original lead Rafe Spall.

The Band’s Visit at the Donmar Warehouse got six nominations in five categories, with Sharif Afifi and Peter Polycarpou both nominated in the Best actor in a supporting role in a musical category.

Prima Facie, which ran at the Harold Pinter Theatre, got five nominations, including an acting nod for Jodie Comer.

Tammy Faye The Musical at the Almeida Theatre brought home four nominations, including Andrew Rannells, Katie Brayben and Zubin Varla; as did Good, which played the Harold Pinter Theatre starring David Tennant – who is nominated.

Sylvia at The Old Vic scooped three nods including best choreographer for Kate Prince, best supporting for Beverley Knight and Best New Musical.

Also at three nominations is the Almeida’s production of Peter Morgan’s Patriots – which is coming to the Noel Coward Theatre in May, and saw its lead, Tom Hollander, also score a Best actor nomination; and the National’s production of Blues for an Alabama Sky, including acting nods for Sule Rimi and Giles Terera.

Two award winners already announced are Special Awards, for outstanding contributions to the theatre industry, with Dame Arlene Phillips awarded this year’s ‘Special Award’, and Sir Derek Jacobi receiving the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’.

The Olivier Awards will take place on Sunday 2 April at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Hannah Waddingham.

Eligible shows for consideration are new productions that opened between 21 February 2022 and 14 February 2023, in a theatre that’s a member – or special affiliate member – of the Society of London Theatre, provided it ran for a minimum amount of performances required for each category.

Shows that were eligible for this year’s awards and that are now playing in London include Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons at the Harold Pinter Theatre; Oklahoma! at the Wyndham’s Theatre; My Son’s a Queer, (But What Can You Do?) at the Ambassador’s Theatre; Janet McTeer in Phaedra at the National Theatre; Felicity Kendal in Noises Off at the Phoenix Theatre; Disney’s Newsies at the Troubadour Theatre Wembley Park; Beverley Knight in Sylvia at The Old Vic; and comedy The Unfriend at the Criterion Theatre.
