A new stage adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror story The Shining is coming to the West End.
The Shining is set to be directed by Tony Award-winner Ivo van Hove (A Little Life, West Side Story), and adapted for the stage by Tony Award-winner Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).
Hollywood superstar Ben Stiller was originally attached to star in the show, although no casting has currently been announced.
The Shining is produced by the West End and Broadway producers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Sonia Friedman (Mean Girls, The Book of Mormon) and Colin Callendar (All Creatures Great and Small).
The Shining is coming to London’s West End in 2025, although there are no current details of venue or dates. Check back for updates or sign-up for alerts.
Author Jack Torrance (Ben Stiller) takes a job as a winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado, hoping to cure his writer’s block. He brings his family with him: his wife Wendy, and his son, Danny, who is plagued by psychic premonitions. As Jack continues to struggle with his writing, Danny’s visions become more and more disturbing. As Jack starts to discover the hotel’s dark secrets, he begins to unravel into a homicidal maniac, hell-bent on terrorizing his family.

The Shining is rumoured to star Hollywood actor, comedian, writer and producer Ben Stiller in the lead role of Jack Torrance. Ben Stiller is best known for his movie roles including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Zoolander, The Cable Guy, There’s Something About Mary, the Meet the Parents trilogy, DodgeBall, Tropic Thunder, the Madagascar series, and the Night at the Museum trilogy. His stage work includes the 2011 Broadway revival of John Guare’s House of Blue Leaves with Edie Falco and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The play is adapted by Tony award-winning playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), and based on Stephen King’s 1977 classic horror novel The Shining. The novel was also turned into a 1980 movie produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd.
The play is produced by Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, who are teaming up again after producing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
