Book now for for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf, Ntozake Shange’s celebrated choreopoem, in a landmark new production directed by JMK Award winner Diane Page, marking the grand reopening of The Yard Theatre
Arriving fifty years after its first performance and celebrated two-year Broadway run, the production has been called “long overdue in London” — a play that Yard Artistic Director Jay Miller has said “should be up there with the Sarah Kanes, the Caryl Churchills” of the theatrical canon.
Directed by Diane Page, with original music by Jammz, the production stars Tatenda Naomi Matsvai, Nadine Higgin, Cherrelle Skeete, Alex Thomas-Smith and Ibilola Rossi. Told through poetry, movement and song, for colored girls… weaves together stories of love and violence, joy and survival, and what it feels like to come out the other side.
Expect a genuinely singular piece of theatre: grief becomes chant, movement becomes prayer, as seven women, distinguished only by the colours they wear, share their stories through Shange’s unique blend of poetry, dance and song. This is choreopoem, not conventional drama: an intense, moving and profoundly human theatrical experience unlike anything else currently on in London.
