Book now for Romeo & Juliet at Greenwich Theatre this summer in a fresh, music-fuelled new staging of Shakespeare’s greatest love story.
Running from 3 to 25 July 2026, this reimagined production forms part of the theatre’s long-term ambition to establish a recurring Shakespeare tradition in southeast London, bridging generations of audiences through reimagined classics.
Romeo & Juliet in London
This spellbinding revival follows the tragic fortunes of Juliet (Ava Honey, making her professional debut) and Romeo (Blossom Timothy, Globe Players) as they battle against the will of their families to be together.
In a notable reimagining, Romeo is played as a female character, a choice director James Haddrell describes not as radical but as a way of foregrounding the play’s true subject: “a universal story about parents who have lost touch with their children, and the extremes of emotion we can feel when we’re young.“
Directed by Greenwich Theatre Artistic Director James Haddrell, the production also stars Charlotte Harwood (Loserville), Nikita Johal (Spring Awakening), Matt Penson (Julius Caesar) and actor and Musical Director James Aldred (The Crown, Netflix).
With live music woven throughout, this is a vibrant, accessible take on one of Shakespeare’s most beloved tragedies and perfect for newcomers and devotees alike.
Book Romeo & Juliet tickets
Romeo & Juliet plays Greenwich Theatre from 3 to 25 July 2026. With a strictly limited summer run at one of southeast London’s best-loved theatres, early booking is recommended.
Greenwich Theatre presents a bold, music-fuelled new adaptation of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy as part of its inaugural producing season. The greatest love story ever told follows Romeo and Juliet, two young people from feuding families who fall desperately, recklessly in love and whose devotion sets in motion a chain of events that will end in heartbreak.
This fresh summer staging reimagines Romeo as a female character, a choice that director James Haddrell sees not as a statement about gender or sexuality, but as a way of returning the play to its essential truth: a story about parents who have lost touch with their children, and the overwhelming intensity of young love in a world where violence is never far away.
With live music woven throughout and a single acting company bringing Verona to life, this is Shakespeare made vivid, immediate and accessible, in a production designed to speak to longtime lovers of the play and first-time audiences alike.
