Tom Stoppard’s 1972 play Jumpers has been announced as part of Hampstead Theatre’s new programming. This is the first revival of the play in London in over 20 years.
The news comes following several record-breaking seasonal revivals of Tom Stoppard’s work at Hampstead Theatre, including Indian Ink, The Invention of Love, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Hapgood. Blanche McIntyre, who directed The Invention of Love in 2024 with Simon Russel Beale, returns to direct Jumpers.
Casting has yet to be announced but the play is set to premiere as part of Hampstead Theatre’s upcoming season. Previously announced programming for the Hampstead also includes a production of Kimberley Akimbo, beginning previews in August.
The story of Jumper
Set in an alternative reality, Jumpers imagines what the world would be like if Britain had put a man on the moon, and Radical Liberals have taken over the British government. George, a Professor of Moral Philosophy, is up late writing a paper but his wife’s party is driving him to distraction, so he calls the police. Unbeknownst to him, the police arrive instead to investigate a murder.
Jumpers is often considered one of the more ambitious plays in Stoppard’s oeuvre, though it is not as recognisable as some of his other work like Arcadia or Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. This new production promises to be one to catch if past precedent is anything to go by.
