Southwark Playhouse Borough is set to host the world premiere of Max Wilkinson’s latest work Night City, directed by award nominee Ebenezer Bamgboye (Lonely Londoners).

Billed as an epic modern drama, Night City is playing at Southwark Playhouse Borough from 9 September to 3 October 2026.

From the writer of ‘Rainer’

Playwright Max Wilkinson (Union) returns to the London stage following the success of his hit play Rainer, which earned rave reviews and is currently in development as a TV series.

Known for his “acidly funny” (Financial Times) and “original, bold writing” (The Stage), Wilkinson’s work frequently explores the absurdity of modern urban life. With Night City, he draws on first-hand insight to create a symphony of invisible people working in the gig economy.

Directed by Ebenezer Bamgboye

The production is helmed by Ebenezer Bamgboye, an award-nominated director and the current Programming Associate at Southwark Playhouse. Bamgboye’s recent credits include the widely celebrated production of The Lonely Londoners (Jermyn Street Theatre / Kiln Theatre), which garnered five Offie nominations and five-star reviews in The Guardian and The Telegraph.

A portrait of modern survival

Set against the backdrop of a city that never sleeps, Night City uses three intersecting stories to explore the high-pressure world of the gig economy.

Told through the eyes of a driver, a care worker, and a waitress, the play shines a light on the invisible workforce juggling multiple jobs and rising costs.

Night City draws on real experiences to reflect the current reality of insecure work, rising costs and the pressure to keep going.

Incorporating dark humour and kinetic movement, the play is performed by a cast of three, with casting for the show to be announced.
