Wicked stars Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande are set to star in a new production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Sunday in the Park with George.

Sunday in the Park with George will play at the Barbican Theatre in London in summer 2027, with exact dates to be announced.

As widely rumoured, the production will be directed by Tony Award and Olivier Award winner Marianne Elliott (War Horse, Company), and designed by multi-award-winner Tom Scutt (Cabaret, Into the Woods).

Sunday in the Park with George has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine.

Tickets for the season at the Barbican will go on sale in Autumn 2026. Sunday in the Park with George is playing at the Barbican ahead of the venue closing for refurbishment in 2028.

The show will be produced in London by Empire Street Productions and presented in association with the Barbican.

Further details are to be announced.

The show is inspired by the French painter George Seurat’s work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and follows a character called George, a fictional version of the painter, who immerses himself in the painting.

Earlier today Jonathan and Ariana posted a photo of the pair sitting in front of A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, at the Art Institute of Chicago, with the words “All it has to be is good.”

The stars of blockbuster movies Wicked and Wicked: For Good, Jonathan Bailey (Richard II, Company) and pop superstar Ariana Grande, are reuniting for the show, playing George and Dot respectively.

Jonathan Bailey will be following in the footsteps of Jake Gyllenhaal, who played the role on Broadway in 2017.

Marianne Elliott will be returning to Sondheim following her acclaimed West End and Broadway revival of Company, which starred Jonathan Bailey, alongside Rosalie Craig (Riot Women).

Marianne Elliott’s other forthcoming projects include directing Les Liaisons Dangereuses at the National Theatre, starring Monica Barbaro, Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner.
