Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler) and Tony Award® winner Annaleigh Ashford will star in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday in the Park with George.

First seen at New York City Center in 2016, followed by a sold-out run at Hudson Theater on Broadway in 2017, this acclaimed production, directed by Sarna Lapine, will transfer to London’s West End.

Originally scheduled to run in 2021 this show is postponed with new dates to be announced.

What's the story of Sunday in the Park with George?

Sondheim and Lapine’s masterpiece follows painter Georges Seurat (Jake Gyllenhaal) in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting – A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Consumed by his need to “finish the hat”, Seurat alienates the French bourgeoisie, spurns his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot (Annaleigh Ashford), not realising that his actions will reverberate for the next 100 years.

The cast is led by Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford.

Jake Gyllenhaal is a Golden Globe and BAFTA award winning actor best known for Brokeback Mountain, Jarhead, Nightcrawler, Nocturnal Animals and the American satirical supernatural horror thriller film Velvet Buzzsaw currently screening on Netflix.

Annaleigh Ashford is known for her work on Broadway as Glinda in Wicked, Margot in Legally Blonde, Lauren in Kinky Boots and her Tony Award winning performance as Essie Carmichael in the revival of You Can’t Take It With You. She is also known for playing Betty DiMello on the Showtime American period drama television series Masters of Sex.

‘Sunday in the Park with George’ postponed until 2021
The West End transfer of Sunday in the Park with George starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford has been postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19. First seen at New York City Center in 2016, followed by a sold-out run at Hudson Theater on Broadway in 2017, this acclaimed production was due to open at the Savoy Theatre on 5 June 2020. New 2021 performances dates are yet to be confirmed but all customers will be contacted regarding their bookings and will be exchanged once new dates are confirmed. Jake Gyllenhaal said “We are, of course, disappointed to postpone our upcoming season, but know that safety is a top priority and science must lead the way. London’s West End is incredibly special to me, and it will be an absolute honor to return to the stage so we can eventually share Sunday In The Park With George with audiences in 2021." Annaleigh Ashford said "As we all do our part to make the world a safe place for ourselves and our neighbours, it is with a heavy heart that this production of Sunday in the Park With George is postponed. Award winning actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler) will take to the London stage in Summer 2020 in a new production of Sunday in the Park with George. The Velvet Buzzsaw actor will play painter Georges Seurat in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical which opens at the Savoy Theatre for a limited 12-week run from 11 June 2020. Tony Award winning actress Annaleigh Ashford (Wicked, Legally Blonde) will play his neglected lover Dot with further casting to be announced. The production previously ran at New York City Center in 2016, followed by a sold-out run at Hudson Theater on Broadway in 2017.  Sunday in the Park with George follows painter Georges Seurat in the months leading up to the completion of his most famous painting – A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
