The Fantasticks is heading to Broadway in a bold new reimagining as a contemporary gay love story.
Producers have announced plans for a Broadway production that will reinterpret the Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt classic through a queer lens, with the central romance now between Matt and Lewis. The traditionally meddling fathers are reimagined as mothers, while the show’s core themes of love, loss and reconciliation remain intact. Jones completed the revised book and lyrics before his death in 2023 at the age of 95.
The new production will be directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies, Death Becomes Her), with new orchestrations by Sam Davis (Death Becomes Her, New York, New York) and design by Jason Sherwood.
Casting details and performance dates will be announced in due course.
The Fantasticks is produced by Broadway & Beyond Theatricals, Daryl Roth and True North Theatricals.
First explored in regional productions across the US from 2022, this reimagined version offers a fresh perspective on the beloved musical, which originally premiered Off Broadway in 1960 and went on to run for an extraordinary 42 years, clocking up 17,162 performances.
While The Fantasticks holds the record as the longest-running musical in history, the world’s longest-running play remains Agatha Christie’s iconic whodunnit The Mousetrap, which opened in 1952 and continues its historic run at the St Martin’s Theatre in London’s West End.
Other long-running West End favourites include Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera, both enduring staples of London’s theatre scene.
