Ansel Elgort to make professional dance debut in Quadrophenia, A Rock Ballet at New York City Center

Film star Ansel Elgort will swap the big screen for the stage this autumn, making his professional dance debut in Pete Townshend’s Quadrophenia, A Rock Ballet, directed by Rob Ashford and choreographed by the late Paul Roberts.

The Golden Globe Award nominee will star as The Godfather in the acclaimed production, which makes its U.S. premiere at New York City Center from 14–16 November 2025. The show arrives in New York following a critically acclaimed run at Sadler’s Wells in London and a UK tour, produced by Sadler’s Wells, Extended Play, and Universal Music UK.

Elgort — best known for his breakout film roles in Baby Driver and The Fault in Our Stars — starred as Tony in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film adaptation of West Side Story alongside Ariana DeBose and Rachel Zegler, who has just finished an acclaimed run in Jamie Lloyd’s London revival of Evita. Now he returns to his first love, dance, for this high-octane reimagining of The Who’s legendary rock opera.

“Rock n’ Roll is not dead,” Elgort said. “I think it’s having a rebirth right now… Even better, a rock ballet! My roots are in ballet and theatre, and to be able to return to the stage in The Who’s Quadrophenia feels like a gift from the rock gods.”

Director Rob Ashford said, “I’ve always been very impressed with Ansel as an actor and knew about his training at the School of American Ballet. Quadrophenia seemed like a great opportunity to combine those two talents.”

Pete Townshend, who wrote the original 1973 Quadrophenia album for The Who, added: “I’m thrilled to welcome Ansel to Quadrophenia. The spirit of Rock n’ Roll was not just my generation. It’s every generation.”

Elgort trained at New York’s School of American Ballet and attended LaGuardia High School, later making his stage debut at New York City Center – Stage I in Regrets.

He joins rising British dance star Paris Fitzpatrick, who takes on the lead role of Jimmy. Fitzpatrick recently won Outstanding Male Modern Performance at the National Dance Awards 2024 for his Romeo in Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures production of Romeo and Juliet.

Set to a new orchestral version of Townshend’s Quadrophenia arranged by Rachel Fuller and recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the show fuses live rock energy with contemporary dance, with costumes by Paul Smith.

Later this month, Birmingham Royal Ballet brings Black Sabbath – The Ballet to Sadler’s Wells, a new production curated by Carlos Acosta that celebrates the music and legacy of the heavy metal pioneers.
