Olivier Award-winning actress Romola Garai will return to the Almeida Theatre to lead a bold new version of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins. The production is set to run from 31 March to 16 May 2026.
This staging is part of the Almeida’s newly unveiled season, the last to be led by Rupert Goold. Garai, who won the 2025 Olivier Award for her performance in The Years, will play Nora Helmer in this modern version by Anya Reiss, exploring the fault lines in marriage, money, and power with sharp, contemporary dialogue.
It has been a stellar year for Garai, who was also nominated for a second Olivier Award in 2025 for her performance in Giant at the Royal Court Theatre, opposite John Lithgow. Her return to the Almeida promises to be another major moment in what has become a defining period in her stage career.
Described as “a provocative drama about the lies we tell to keep things sweet at home,” the play will be directed by Hill-Gibbins, known for his bold interpretations of classic texts including Ghosts and The Tragedy of King Richard the Second.

Part of a Landmark Season
The Almeida’s new season includes ten productions ranging from world premieres to revivals, including Golden Boy starring Josh O’Connor, the first ever stage adaptation of Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty and Goold’s own return to American Psycho. Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold said, “Today we announce my final season as Artistic Director at the Almeida. A season that, I hope, captures the spirit and values of our past 12 years. We present 10 productions including four world premieres, four revivals of classic plays and a revisit of the musical from my first season at the Almeida.
