Two more high-profile stars are rumoured to be planning their National Theatre debuts.
This week the National Theatre announced its new season for late 2025 onwards, the first for new National Theatre artistic director and Co-CEO Indhu Rubasingham.
The star quotient is already very high, with award-winners such as Paul Mescal, Letitia Wright, Aidan Turner, Lesley Manville, Monica Barbaro, James McArdle, Hiran Abeysekera, and Nicola Coughlan already set to tread the National’s boards.
Baz Bamigboye in Deadline is now reporting that Oscar-nominees Colman Domingo (Rustin) and Jeremy Strong (Succession) are in talks with Indhu Rubasingham about making their own National Theatre debuts.
Indhu told Baz that, “They’re the real deal, and I want them here at the National. I’m talking to them about what they might want to do here.”
Jeremy Strong won a Tony Award in 2024 for his performance in Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People on Broadway. He has also scored an Emmy win for Succession, and Oscar nods for The Apprentice.
Up next, he is starring in Peter Morgan’s new Netflix adaptation of The Boys from Brazil.
Colman Domingo is already a seasoned London stage performer, having appeared in A Boy and His Soul at the Kiln Theatre in 2013, and his Olivier and Tony Award-nominated performance in The Scottsboro Boys.
Oscar-nominated for both Rustin and Sing Sing, his current and forthcoming screen work includes starring in Netflix comedy The Four Seasons with Tina Fey; plus Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire, Steven Spielberg’s new movie about UFOs, Euphoria season 3, Edgar Wright’s new movie of The Running Man, and the forthcoming Michael Jackson biopic written by John Logan.
There’s no current news about which shows Domingo and Strong will star in at the National Theatre, or dates.
Highlights of the new National Theatre season include: Indhu Rubasingham directing new play Bacchae starring James McArdle, Clare Perkins and Ukweli Roach; Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) starring in Hamlet; Nicola Coughlan and Siobhán McSweeney in The Playboy of the Western World; a new adaptation of The Jungle Book in the Olivier Theatre for Christmas 2026; Marianne Elliott directing a revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses starring Monica Barbaro, Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner; Letitia Wright making her National Theatre debut in Tracey Scott Wilson’s The Story; a new collaboration with Stormzy; Ben Daniels in Terence Rattigan’s Man and Boy; a new musical based on hit film PRIDE, directed by Matthew Warchus; and Paul Mescal making his National Theatre debut in Tom Murphy’s A Whistle in the Dark directed by Caitríona McLaughlin, and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman directed by Rebecca Frecknall.
