The Donmar Warehouse’s acclaimed production of Macbeth is going down well with cinema audiences.
The show, which is now playing in cinemas across the UK, has scored 100% on movie ratings website Rotten Tomatoes.
Starring David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch) as Macbeth, and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife) as Lady Macbeth, the production originally played at the Donmar Warehouse in London, transferring to the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre.
Macbeth is currently screening in cinemas in the UK, US, Australia, and selected international territories from Trafalgar Releasing, who have announced that the film has already grossed over £2 million globally in its first week, and has been screened in more than 1,000 cinemas globally including the UK, Ireland and the US.
Directed by Max Webster (Life of Pi), Macbeth also stars Moyo Akandé (Ross), Annie Grace (Musician & Gentlewoman), Brian James O’Sullivan (Donalbain/Soldier/Murderer & Musician), Casper Knopf (Macduff’s Son/Fleance/Young Siward), Cal MacAninch (Banquo), Kathleen MacInnes (The Singer & ensemble), Alasdair Macrae (Musician & ensemble), Rona Morison (Lady Macduff), Noof Ousellam (Macduff), Raffi Phillips (Macduff’s Son/Fleance/Young Siward), Jatinder Singh Randhawa (The Porter/Seytan), Ros Watt (Malcolm), and Benny Young (Duncan/Doctor).
This production originally played the Donmar Warehouse in London at the end of 2023 and into 2024, scoring some great reviews from the critics, including five stars from the Guardian, Telegraph and Financial Times.

The sound designer for the show is Gareth Fry, who has designed an extraordinary sound experience for Macbeth, using groundbreaking Binaural sound technology to create a 3D soundscape, which the audience experiences by wearing headphones. Every whisper on stage is heard by the audience, with sound becoming a central, critical part of the production – and something which translates well to cinemas.

Director Max Webster’s other recent projects include The Importance of Being Earnest at the National Theatre starring Ncuti Gatwa, Sharon D Clarke, and Hugh Skinner. That show is also getting a cinema release, courtesy of NT Live, and comes to UK cinemas from next week, 20 February.
Forthcoming Max Webster shows include Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus this spring at the RSC, starring Olivier and Tony Award-winning actor Simon Russell Beale.
David Tennant is hosting this year’s BAFTA awards, this Sunday, 16 February 2025, at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London. Tennant also won an award himself last Sunday, picking up Best Performer in a Play for his performance in Macbeth at the 2025 Whatsonstage Awards.
The show also won Best Play Revival, and Gareth Fry won Best Sound Design.
