The National Theatre’s starry new production of Oscar Wilde comedy The Importance of Being Earnest is getting a UK cinema release courtesy of National Theatre Live (NT Live).

Directed by Max Webster (Macbeth, Life of Pi), The Importance of Being Earnest will screen in UK cinemas this February 2025, from 20 February.

The cinema release comes after playing at the National’s Lyttelton theatre from 20 November 2024 to 25 January 2025.

Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy will star Sharon D Clarke (Lost Boys and Fairies, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Doctor Who) as Lady Bracknell, Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who, Sex Education) as Algernon Moncrieff, Hugh Skinner (W1A, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) as Jack Worthing, Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́ (Rain Dogs, Blues for an Alabama Sky) as Gwendolen Fairfax and Eliza Scanlen (Little Women, Sharp Objects) as Cecily Cardew.

The cast also includes Richard Cant (Stan & Ollie, Mary Queen of Scots) as Reverend Canon Chasuble, and Amanda Lawrence (Star Wars: Episode – IX The Rise of Skywalker, Angels in America) as Miss Prism.

Currently playing in cinemas from NT Live is The Old Vic’s production of Present Laughter starring Andrew Scott; and coming up in cinemas is a re-release of Prima Facie starring Jodie Comer, from 12 September 2024.
