Real-life mother and daughter, Olivier Award-winning actor Imelda Staunton (Hello, Dolly!, Harry Potter) and Bessie Carter (Bridgerton, Outrageous), are set to star in a new revival of George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs Warren’s Profession.
Directed by Dominic Cooke, Mrs Warren’s Profession will play the Garrick Theatre in London from 10 May to 16 August 2025.
Imelda Staunton will play Mrs Kitty Warren, with Bessie Carter as her daughter, Vivie Warren. Further casting is to be announced.
The controversial play is centred on Cambridge graduate Vivie Warren (Bessie Carter), who discovers that her mother, Kitty (Imelda Staunton) has made her fortune from running brothels.
Dominic Cooke reunites with Imelda Staunton following acclaimed productions of Hello, Dolly! at the London Palladium, and Follies at the National Theatre.
Joining Dominic Cooke in the creative team is Design by Chloe Lamford and Casting by Amy Ball, with further creatives to be announced.
The show is produced by Sonia Friedman.
Actor Imelda Staunton said in a statement: “The new year felt like the perfect time to return to the stage in Mrs Warren’s Profession, a play which asks ever pertinent questions about the role of women in society, and the choices they make for survival. I couldn’t be happier to be stepping into the rehearsal room with my very great friend and colleague Dominic; and my brilliant daughter Bessie. What a treat for 2025.”
Director Dominic Cooke said: “Although Mrs. Warren’s Profession is over 120 years old, it still has the power to shock with its frank and provocative examination of the exploitative nature of society and the double standards applied to women. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Imelda Staunton on Follies and Hello, Dolly! and I’m thrilled to collaborate with her for the first time on a play, especially alongside the super talented Bessie Carter. Additionally, I’m excited to reunite with Sonia Friedman after fifteen years. I can’t wait to bring this remarkable play and brilliant cast to London audiences in the spring.”
Mrs Warren’s Profession is running at the Garrick Theatre from 10 May to 16 August 2025.
Currently playing at the Garrick Theatre is Why Am I So Single?, until 19 January 2025. Coming up is Mike Bartlett’s new play Unicorn, starring Nicola Walker, Stephen Mangan & Erin Doherty, from 4 February 2025.
