What is One Day the Musical about?
This emotionally-charged and powerful musical explores the enduring bond between Emma and Dexter, from their first meeting on 15 July 1988 – St. Swithin’s Day – to the life-changing moments that follow each year on the same date.
Emma walks into Dexter’s life on the night of their graduation. One unsuspecting day that changes them both forever. But where will they be on this day next year? And the year after that? And every year that follows? As Em and Dex’s lives intertwine through joy and heartbreak, missed opportunities and second chances, they navigate love, ambition and the unpredictable twists of life.

The history of One Day the Musical
One Day the Musical made its world premiere at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh earlier this year. The location for its debut was intentional as Emma and Dexter first meet in Edinburgh on graduation night. Playwright David Greig also has a long association with the Royal Lyceum as he was previously its Artistic Director.
To emulate the intimacy of the novel, the theatre was reconfigured in the round with cabaret-style tables and chairs around the stage. The show will make its West End premiere at the Garrick Theatre on 17 November 2026.
Who is in One Day the Musical?
West End stars Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose reprise their roles from the world premiere at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh.
- Dexter Mayhew – Jamie Muscato (Cabaret, The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge!) – A privileged and charming man who finds out the hard way that there is a cost to his carefree lifestyle. Emma grounds him and influences his personal growth.
- Emma Morley – Sharon Rose (Sylvia, Hamilton) – An intelligent and ambitious woman who aspires to change the world while navigating a complex relationship with Dexter.
Full casting is yet to be announced.
The playwright: David Greig
Adapted from the bestselling, era-defining 2009 novel One Day by David Nicholls, One Day the Musical has a book by David Greig. Greig has previously tackled everything from mountainside thrillers (Touching the Void) to mammoth musicals (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).
After a trailblazing eight years, Greig stepped down as Artistic Director of the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh at the end of the 2024/2025 season to focus on writing, directing and other literary projects.
This is not the first time Greig has collaborated with director Max Webster: they previously worked together on The Lorax at London’s Old Vic in 2015.
The creative team
Key creatives:

Screen history
One Day was first adapted into a 2011 film, directed by Lone Scherfig and starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Reviews were mixed and critics said that the film lacked the emotional depth of its bestselling source material.
But it was a different story for the 2024 Netflix series adaptation, starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall in the title roles. The One Day series was a huge hit for both fans of the books and those discovering the story for the first time. It was praised for its beautifully low-key, yet devastating romance.

Is One Day the Musical worth seeing?
Yes, whether you are a fan of the bestselling book, the hit Netflix series or are meeting Dex and Em for the first time, it is a timeless story of love, loss and second chances.
The lead casting has been announced as Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose, who bring a catalogue of West End credits including Hamilton and Cabaret, and more musical theatre stars will no doubt be announced over the coming months. The pair are also reprising their roles from the Edinburgh world premiere, which opened to critical acclaim, including a four-star review in The Herald and it was describes as a “real triumph” by Broadway World.
It also brings together a top-notch creative team including director Max Webster – his biggest hit The Life of Pi was packed with theatrical flair and swagger.
