West End star and musician Beverley Knight has been awarded a European Diversity Award.
The star won the Outstanding Commitment to Diversity Award at the European Diversity Awards, held last Friday 8 November 2024 at the InterContinental London Park Lane.
The awards were hosted by Sky News presenters Kamali Melbourne and Gillian Joseph, and celebrate leading diversity and inclusion champions while recognising achievements across all strands of Diversity: age, disability, gender, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, social mobility and sexual orientation.
In true Beverley Knight fashion, while accepting the award the star burst into song to pay tribute to the honour, singing “The Greatest Love of All”.
Beverley Knight said on Instagram that she was “utterly gobsmacked” to have won the award, and that “the whole night was just beautiful, an inclusive and diverse room in every sense from various business and companies across Europe… A night I won’t forget in a hurry.”
Linda Riley, European Diversity Awards founder, said in a statement: “These awards are all about recognising the people who’ve gone above and beyond to champion diversity and inclusion, inspiring others to get involved too. The organisations and leaders we’re celebrating tonight show just how much effort is going into making workplaces more inclusive and truly living out those values. Together, we’re making a real difference.”
Often referred to as the Queen of British Soul, Beverley Knight is an award-winning singer, songwriter, actor and record producer.
Beverley Knight recently starred as Delores Van Cartier in Sister Act at the Dominion Theatre. Her previous West End theatre roles include playing Emmeline Pankhurst in Sylvia at the Old Vic in London, Faye Treadwell in The Drifters Girl, Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard, Felicia Farrell in Memphis The Musical, and Grizabella in Cats.
Knight has also won an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Sylvia, and has two Olivier Award nominations, plus has won three MOBO Awards, an Outstanding Achievement Award at the Urban Music Awards, been three times nominated for Best Female at the Brit Awards and twice nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize.
