About La Bohème
In the frost-bitten garrets of Paris, a poet dreams. In the shadows beside him, a seamstress carries a sorrow she cannot name. La Bohème is the story of Rodolfo and Mimì — of love found in the cold, and of what it costs to keep it.
But as winter deepens, so does the precariousness of their world. Puccini’s opera weaves together happiness and sorrow with breathtaking ease, building to one of the most emotionally powerful finales in all of opera.
La Bohème plot and storyline
The opera unfolds across four acts. In Act I, Rodolfo and Mimì meet and fall in love. Act II plunges the bohemians into the animated Christmas-night crowds of the Café Momus, where Musetta makes a memorable entrance. Acts III and IV follow the slow unravelling of love and friendship against the cold backdrop of a Paris winter. The libretto was written by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on Henri Murger’s semi-autobiographical novel Scènes de la vie de bohème.
