Tony Awards 2024 Nominations announced

Nominations have been announced for the 77th annual Tony Awards 2024.

Organised by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, the Tony Awards are Broadway theatre’s most prestigious awards.

The nominations were announced live from New York today, 30 April 2024, by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry.

British people up for Tonys include Cabaret star Eddie Redmayne, who was nominated for best actor in a musical. Overall, Cabaret received 9 nominations, including best set design and best costumes for Tom Scutt, best lighting for Isabella Byrd and best sound for Nick Lidster; although director Rebecca Frecknall was overlooked.

Maria Friedman did score a best director of a musical nod, for her production of Merrily We Roll Along, plus acting nods for Brit Daniel Radcliffe, and Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez. The show scored 7 nominations overall.

Leading the list of shows with the most nominations are musical Hell’s Kitchen and play Stereophonic, both with 13 nominations each. In the case of Stereophonic that’s record-breaking for a play, beating the tally of 12 set by Slave Play in 2020.

Back to the Future, which started in the UK before heading to Broadway and continues to play at London’s Adelphi Theatre, received two nominations, including for Roger Bart, who originated the role of Doc Brown on stage in London.

Peter Morgan’s Patriots, which started life at the Almeida, ran in the West End, and is now playing on Broadway directed by Rupert Goold, got one nomination, an acting nod for Michael Stuhlbarg.

The Tony Awards ceremony will take place at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, on Sunday 16 June 2024. The event will once again be hosted by Ariana DeBose.

The eligibility date for the awards was Thursday 25 April 2024 for all Broadway productions which meet the eligibility requirements.

Last year’s 2023 Tony Awards winners included Jodie Comer, who took home Best Actress for her performance in Prima Facie. Musical Kimberly Akimbo took home the most Tonys, with five, including Best Musical and best actress for Victoria Clark.
