This year’s 33rd Annual Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards 2024 will take place this month, on 25 March 2024 at @sohoplace theatre in London.
The Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards are judged by full members of the Drama section of the UK’s Critics’ Circle, who are accredited, working theatre critics. Judging of the awards is through a one-member, one-vote system.
Presenters lined up to hand out awards at the ceremony include Faith Omole and Akiya Henry, who are currently performing in the Almeida’s King Lear; Giles Terera (Hamilton, Clyde’s), who is about to star in Power of Sail at the Menier Chocolate Factory; Isabella Pappas, star of Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Phoenix Theatre; Arthur Hughes (Shardlake); and Tracy-Ann Oberman, who is currently playing Shylock in The Merchant of Venice 1936 at the Criterion Theatre.
Guests scheduled to attend the afternoon event include Andrew Scott (Vanya), Sophie Okonedo (Medea), Zadie Smith (The Wife of Willesden), Marisha Wallace (Guys & Dolls, Celebrity Big Brother), John McCrea (Everybody’s Talking about Jamie), Gethin Antony (Game of Thrones), Hammed Animashaun (Black Ops) and Patrick Vail (Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Oklahoma!).
Performances at the ceremony will include a preview of Why Am I So Single? A Big Fancy Musical, the new musical from Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, creators of SIX, coming to the Garrick Theatre in London.
The nominees for the 2024 Empty Space Peter Brook Award have also been revealed, with Soho Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, The Orange Tree Richmond, Theatre Royal Windsor and the Finborough Theatre all nominated.
The Empty Space Peter Brook Award was launched last year in partnership with critic and producer Blanche Marvin MBE, to recognise a theatre space that embodies the spirit of the late theatre director Peter Brook both in its use of space and in its relationship to its locality.
Sponsors of the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards include Nyman Libson Paul, the theatre accountants, as headline sponsors; Finitio: The Employability Experts, sponsoring the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer; Overtures Piano Bar sponsoring the Peter Hepple Award for Best Musical; 5RB sponsoring the Best Actor award; and Marquee TV sponsoring the Best Director award.
