Hit West End one-person musical My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) is set to get a Broadway premiere next year.
Written by and starring Rob Madge, My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) will play Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre this spring for 16 weeks, starting on 27 February 2024, officially opening on 12 March 2024, and closing on 16 June 2024.
The transfer follows multiple sold-out runs in Edinburgh and the West End, including the Garrick Theatre and the Ambassadors Theatre. The show also bagged an Olivier Award nomination.
Billed as an hilarious, poignant, and infectiously joyous one-person play, the show follows the real-life journey of Rob Madge and their family as they explore their son’s love for all things Disney, theatre and their identity as a Queer human.
Just this weekend Rob Madge won the Theatre Award for the show at the Attitude Awards 2023. Rob’s other credits include Mary Poppins at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre, Macbeth at the Gielgud Theatre, Oliver! at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and the Les Misérables 25th Anniversary International Tour and Concert.
My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?) is written and performed by Rob Madge, with direction by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet, Starlight Express, The Little Big Things), and has songs by Pippa Cleary (The Great British Bake Off Musical). Set design and costumes are by Ryan Dawson Laight, with lighting design by Jai Morjaria, sound design by Tingying Dong, video design by George Reeve, and orchestrations by Simon Nathan.
The production will mark Pippa Cleary and Rob Madge’s Broadway debuts. Luke Sheppard currently has & Juliet playing on Broadway.
Next up for Rob Madge is playing Tinker Bell at the London Palladium, in pantomime Peter Pan, alongside Jennifer Saunders and Julian Clary.
The show is produced on Broadway by Tom Smedes, Heather Shields, and Peter Stern by arrangement with Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor Mills.
